Obituary

Sammie Mayes Sr. 93 of Abilene passed away Monday April 7, 2014 at Abilene regional Medical Center. Funeral Services will be held Saturday April 12, 2014 at 1:30pm at King Solomon Baptist Church. A Graveside service will be held at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery Monday April 14, at 11am, with military honors. A visitation will be held at St. John Baptist Church Friday April 11, from 6-8pm. Sammie Mayes Sr. was born February 27, 1921 in Hearne TX, to the parentage of Joe and Dora Mayes. Sammie joined the united states army at an early age and served the United States faithfully in World War I and II. After returning back to Hearne Sammie worked for several jobs including the railroad. Sammie then met and married the love of his life Lucy Stewart in 1949 to this union came 10 children. Sammie was a very devoted Christian man who served as a deacon at St. John Baptist church for over a decade. Being the family man that he was Sammie loved his children and grandchildren, but most of all he loved god. He worked at the greyhound bus station for many years, and retired in 1975. In his spare time you could find him going fishing or just relaxing listening to gospel music. Left to cherish his memory is his Wife of 65 years Lucy Mayes of Abilene, four daughters Sadie Whitfield of Abilene, Marjorie Wallace (Warren) of Hearne TX, Fannie Mayes (Bill Phillips) of Abilene, and Minister Flora Mayes Chriesman (Rev. Lorenzo) of Abilene. Five sons Sammie Mayes Jr. Glen Mayes, Joe Mayes, Micheal Mayes, and Chrarles Mayes all of Abilene. 25 Grandchildren, and 80 Great Grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends. Preceding him in death are both parents, daughter Lucy Webster and son-in-law Bobby Webster granddaughter Adrian Mayes and great grandson Tione Webster. 8 Brothers, Joe, Leonard, Willie, Arthur, Mack, Baylus, George Gray, and Johnny Ruffins, and 4 sisters May Haley, Marjorie Burleson, Mattie Council, and Martha Whitehead.Condolences may be sent to the family via an online guest book at www.dovefuneralhome.net
