Melvin was born in Compton, California, to M.D. Winn and Velma Earnestine Ray. He later made his home in Brownwood, Texas, where he attended school. Following his education, Melvin attended college for two years before answering the call to serve his country as a member of the Army National Guard, where he proudly served for eight years.
A hardworking man, Melvin spent many years working in the construction industry. Outside of work, he found great joy in the simple things in life. He loved fishing and hunting, but some of his most treasured moments were those spent surrounded by family and friends.
Melvin was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and his faith remained an important part of his life.
One of Melvin's greatest blessings was the love he shared with the love of his life, Fayrene Debose-Winn. Together, they shared 50 loving years filled with memories, companionship, and devotion. Fayrene preceded him in death, leaving behind a love and legacy that remained forever close to his heart.
Melvin leaves to cherish his memory his beloved granddaughter, Briana Townsend of Houston, Texas; his sister, Lessie Dean Wraggs of Compton, California; along with extended family members, friends, and loved ones whose lives were touched by his presence.
He was preceded in death by his parents, M.D. Winn and Velma Earnestine Ray; his beloved Fayrene Debose-Winn; Brother Roderick Hearne and his daughter, Alicia Townsend.
Melvin will be remembered for his love of family and friends, his years of hard work and service, and the many memories created over a life well lived. Though his earthly journey has ended, the love he gave and the memories he leaves behind will continue to live in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
