LaTorrey's Story Unfolds.... "A TIME TO BE BORN..." Ecclesiastes 3 LaTorrey Louis Gilbert was born on January 16, 1971, in Midland, Texas, to Larry and Carolyn Gilbert. "TRAIN UP A CHILD..." Proverbs 22:6 From an early age, LaTorrey showed great promise, both academically and personally. He graduated as an Honor Graduate from high school in Midland, where he excelled in academics, athletics, and leadership. He was a proud member of the varsity football team, the National Honor Society, and served as president of the Engineering Club. His leadership extended to the Student Council, and during his junior year, he was awarded the prestigious Congress-Bundestag Scholarship - a distinction granted to only 310 students in the United States. This life-changing opportunity allowed LaTorrey to spend a year in Germany as a foreign exchange student. During his time abroad, he lived with a German family, attended a local high school, traveled extensively, and became fluent in German - a testament to his curiosity and dedication. Upon returning to the U.S., LaTorrey attended Texas Tech University, where he majored in Kinesiology. During his time at Texas Tech, he pledged Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, proudly embracing the bond and brotherhood of becoming a "Kappa Man." "TRUST IN THE LORD..." Prov 3:5 LaTorrey's faith was a cornerstone of his life. He accepted Christ at the tender age of six at Greater St. Luke A.M.E. Church in Midland. As a young believer, he was deeply involved in church activities - from Sunday School to serving as YPD President and representing the church at the national conference in Atlanta, Georgia. He sang in the choir, ushered, and often portrayed Jesus in church plays. When LaTorrey and his family moved to McKinney and joined S.M.B.C, he still had a heart for ministry. However, because he was later diagnosed with kidney disease and needed a kidney transplant, he became energized to find a kidney donor. Trusting God for favor and with much prayer from the church, LaTorrey's sister, LaCrecha, was led to give him a kidney which was a perfect match. In addition, Pastor Joshua graciously organized a benefit fund to help with LaTorrey's kidney transplant expenses. As soon as LaTorrey became strong enough, he joined the Men's Mime Team in thanksgiving and praise for what God had done in his life. Eventually, as a way to mentor younger members and share his love for worship through movement, he helped to create a Junior Mime Team. "WORK WHILE IT IS DAY..." JOHN 9:4 After graduating from college, LaTorrey became manager of Gold's Gym in Midland. He later decided to move to Irving, Texas to begin working at the Tom Landry Health Science Center. After being diagnosed with kidney disease, he returned to Midland until 2010 when his parents decided to relocate to Mckinney, While in Mckinney, LaTorrey worked as a personal trainer before finding joy as a part-time Recreational Assistant for the City of McKinney's Old Settlers Recreation Center. LaTorrey especially cherished working in the after-school program, connecting with children and colleagues alike. In addition, He enjoyed volunteering as an election clerk during election times. "LOOK NOT EVERY MAN ON HIS OWN THINGS..." Phil 2:4 LaTorrey will be remembered for his creativity, vibrant spirit, and heart for others. His artistic talents, unique sense of style, and mentoring nature left an indelible mark on all who knew him. A loyal friend and wise counselor, he often encouraged those around him to strive for happiness and success. Though strong-willed and opinionated, LaTorrey's compassion always shone through. If he knew he hurt someone's feelings, he was quick to apologize and seek forgiveness - both from the person and from God. His love for family, faith, and community was unwavering. He inspired many through his acts of kindness, laughter, and dedication. "A TIME TO DIE..." Ecclesiastes 3 On February 22, 2025, after 54 years of a life well lived, the Lord dispatched a celestial angel that serenaded LaTorrey causing him to slip away into a sweet sleep. Surrounded by the love of family and friends, He peacefully transitioned into eternal rest. Welcoming him on the other side are his beloved grandparents, Obie and Ruby Gilbert and Jessie and Ozelar Smith; his uncle, Jessie Smith Jr.; his German Shepherd, Aveyon; and several aunts and uncles - L.G. Gilbert, Walter Gilbert, Janet Gilbert, Mary Gilbert, Bobbie Gilbert, Lynn Gilbert, and Bessie Gilbert. His godmother, Marie Holloway, also greeted him with open arms. "BLESSED ARE THEY THAT MOURN, FOR THEY SHALL BE COMFORTED." Matt 5:4 LaTorrey leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and strength.
