Obituary

Allen "Cut-Low" Houston, Sr., was born July 15, 1942, in Brownwood, Texas to Bennie Will Houston, Sr., and Marjorie Maxine Allen Houston. While in Brownwood, Allen attended Hardin High School. In 1955, the family moved to San Antonio, where he attended Highlands High School. Allen graduated from Saint Peter Claver High School in 1961. Allen absolutely loved baseball. He acquired his affection for baseball playing on his father's teams as a young boy. Allen was so talented that he received an athletic scholarship to play baseball for Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas. After attending four years, Allen signed a contract with the Saint Louis Cardinals Baseball Club, where he played for one year. His baseball career ended after he was hit by a pitched baseball, which broke his jaws. Allen met Paula Hawthorne while they were attending Texas Southern University. The two married in 1964 in Dallas, Texas. From this union they had three children: Shonna Rochelle, Allen Perry, Jr., and Ashley Tyrone. Allen worked 25 years for Five Star Distributor, and then retired from Collmer Semiconductor after 15 years of service. Allen spent his spare time doing what he enjoyed most—coaching. Local teams of all levels from little league to adults, learned from Allen. Baseball teams he influenced included the Apaches and the Phillies teams. Allen also played and coached many local softball teams, and he coached the Aces basketball team as well. A proud father, Allen also coached his sons. In fact, both of his sons followed in his footsteps and attended Texas Southern University where both played on the baseball team. Allen joined Canaan Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Jarvis Baker where he met and married Shirleen Thomas, who preceded him in death. He was a very dedicated and faithful church member, who served as a Deacon and a member of the Canaan Baptist Church Male Chorus. Allen loved his family and was always excited about reunions and other family gatherings. He would give you the shirt off his back, if you needed it. Allen Perry "Cut-Low" Houston, Sr., at the age of 73, received his heavenly reward Friday, November 6, 2015, in Dallas, Texas.
