Obituary

Ada Burnie, lovingly known as "Biddie," age 81, of Brownwood, Texas, passed away on October 29, 2026. Ada was born on August 26, 1945, in Mason, Texas, to George Edwin Coates and Ava Coates. The nickname "Biddie," given to her by her older sister, stayed with her throughout her life and became a cherished part of who she was. Ada was known for her strong work ethic, kind heart, and the love she shared with everyone around her. She was a hard worker and was adored by those who had the privilege of knowing her. She dedicated many years of service to the Brownwood Independent School District, where she became a familiar, well-known, and well-loved member of the community. Ada married Thomas Burnie, the love of her life, and together they built a family and raised two children. Her family was at the center of her life, and she shared a special love for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, nieces, and nephews. She also lovingly helped raise three of her brother's children, Jackie Coates Jr., Christy Coates, and Aubrey Coates, extending her love and care beyond her own household. Faith was an important part of Ada's life. While living in Mason, Texas, she joined the First Christian Church and dedicated her life to Christ. Her faith remained an important part of her journey. Ada leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory. She is survived by her beloved husband, Thomas Burnie; her children, Shawna Boykin and Kevin Boykin; her grandchildren, Corey Wishert and Courtney Wishert; and her three great-grandchildren, Alexis Wishert, Ella, and Tommy. She is also survived by her sister, Norma Atchey, the three children she helped raise, Jackie Coates Jr., Christy Coates, and Aubrey Coates, along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Ava Coates; her husband, Wayne Boykin; her daughter, Shawna Boykin; her brother, Jack Coates Sr.; her sister, Eva Lang; and her brother, George Edwin Coates Jr. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to First Christian Church of Brownwood, Texas, and Solaris Hospice for their kindness, compassion, generosity, and loving care during this time. Ada's life was one of hard work, faith, devotion, and love for her family and community. Though she will be deeply missed, the memories she created, the lives she touched, and the love she gave will live on through the many people who knew and loved her. She will forever be remembered as our beloved Biddie.
